Part-time: The Basics

This type of work is perfect way to start your career especially if unsure about the next steps or how far this will go as Part-time work means part-time commitment. This wonderful invention, you are more likely to find more convenient hours for you as there are plenty of part-time jobs available. In fact, recent Government figures show that there are nearly eight million people employed part-time, which equates to a quarter of the UK workforce. After recession, 97% of the jobs created in 2010 were part time which just shows that this sector has the potential to grow as these jobs are easily created.

What is part-time work?

As our country is one of the few that has no specific tipping points that clarify part-time from full-time work, working part-time is classed as any role that involves fewer working hours, generally less than 35 per week. In most cases, a part0time job will involve a mixture of half days, days off and you being asked to host of other flexible hour working schemes.

Why work part-time?

There are endless reasons why you would turn to part-time work, same goes for full-time work. This is just a matter of what suits you best personally. Although there have been reports of people not being able to find a full-time job at all, reality is that part-time jobs are simply much easier to find, which accounts for the large figures of part-time workers.

The Good and the Bad.

For most people working part-time, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. If freedom is important to you, the flexibility involved allows people to maintain the work-life balance that they crave. Often when working full-time job simply isn’t feasible in their situation. It’s worth noting, however, that there are obvious downsides to [art-time work. For a start, you are never going to earn as much money as you would in full-time position. Looking more long term, you should be aware that you are likely to miss out on a lot of the office life that many people class as an essential part of any job. And, assuming you perform well in your role, any promotion offered may require you to go back to full-time work.
